Is forgetting words
at 45 normal?

I searched exactly that at 11pm. Then I cleared my history, like the search itself was evidence. Here is what I wish it had said back.

Where this started

I'm 45. I'd been keeping a private tally for about a year, and it had gotten long enough to scare me.

The name that vanished ninety seconds after the handshake. The word "invoice" lost in a meeting I was running, handed back to me by a colleague ten years younger. Page 12 of the book club book, third attempt. So at 11pm I went looking for the verdict.

A novel open to an early chapter, reading glasses on the page, a glass of wine and a warm lamp behind.

What the 11pm search didn't tell me

Most of what's happening to your memory at 45 is

NORMAL

The under-slept, under-watered, hormone-shifted kind of normal.

Normal doesn't mean you're stuck with it. Three things pull on a midlife memory, and two of them sit on your kitchen counter.

The three levers

Sleep is the hard one. The other two are cheap.

01

Sleep. The lever nobody can sell you.

Sleep that breaks at 3am, or never got deep in the first place, sits behind more brain fog than any supplement conversation admits. No powder fixes it. Anybody who tells you their powder fixes it is selling.

02

Hydration. Most of us are mildly dehydrated by 3pm.

Losing about 1.36 percent of body mass in water, too mild to even make you thirsty, measurably worsened mood, concentration and perceived effort in healthy women. Coffee at 7, coffee at 10, water by accident.

Armstrong et al., 2012, The Journal of Nutrition. Effects measured in healthy women.

03

Fuel. Your brain is 2 percent of your body and burns a fifth of your resting energy.

It spends that energy as ATP, the same molecule your muscles run on. Creatine is how a cell recycles ATP. That's why a muscle supplement ended up in a story about forgetting words.

How the fuel lever works

20%

OF YOUR RESTING ENERGY GOES TO YOUR BRAIN

Same ATP system your muscles run on. Here's one unit of it, on repeat, all day.

  1. ATP. Charged.

Adenosine holding three phosphates. This is the only form of energy a cell can actually spend.

  2. ADP. Spent.

The third phosphate breaks off, and the energy in that one bond does the work. What's left can't be spent again until it gets a phosphate back.

  3. Creatine. The spare phosphate.

Your cells keep a store of phosphocreatine for exactly this handoff. It gives up its phosphate, the ADP becomes ATP again, and the store refills. More creatine on board means a deeper store to hand off from.

No new energy is made anywhere in that loop. Creatine shortens the gap between spending ATP and having it back.

What the trials found

Sixteen randomized trials.
Three things moved.

  1. 01

    Memory

  2. 02

    Attention

  3. 03

    Processing speed

And the effects were stronger in women.

That's the whole list. Overall cognition and executive function didn't significantly improve, and the effect sizes were modest. Creatine isn't a smart pill and we're not going to sell it to you as one.

Xu et al., 2024, Frontiers in Nutrition. Meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials.

The thesis

You're not losing your mind.

The circled word is the one I forgot at the store. Twice.

How long it takes

28

DAYS OF DAILY SCOOPS BEFORE THE STORES ARE FULL

Roughly four weeks of steady 3 to 5g doses fills the stores as completely as a week of mega-dosing, with no loading phase (Hultman et al., 1996, Journal of Applied Physiology). Brain stores fill more slowly than muscle. Each scoop: 5g creatine monohydrate + electrolytes (1,000mg sodium, 200mg potassium, 60mg magnesium). Zero caffeine.

The hydration lever pays this week, because the electrolytes are the reason you finish the glass. The fuel lever takes the month. Sleep is still on you, sorry.

What you're actually getting

5g per scoop.

The studied dose. No proprietary blend, no mystery herbs.

Electrolytes, Mg, Na and K.

The hydration lever, every milligram printed on the label.

Zero caffeine.

Sleep is a lever too. We're not going to wreck it at 2:45pm.

Third-party tested.

The dose on the label is the dose in the scoop.

Calibrated for women in their 40s.

Lighter taste, no junk, hydration first.

What I'm on

Metra Creatine Hydration.

A light citrus electrolyte drink carrying the full 5g studied dose of creatine monohydrate, the whole amount printed on the label.

Made for women who read labels, check sources, and have been burned by a supplement before.

For women 40+.
Not a gym brand.
Not a wellness brand.

The offer

Three tubs. Ninety days.
One scoop at 2:45pm.

Most of your creatine sits in muscle. Your head draws on the same store.

$1.17 a day

against $1.73 a day buying them one tub at a time

Three tubs · one scoop a day · cancel anytime

About $1.17 a day, against $1.73 buying them one tub at a time. Less than the nootropic blend with fourteen strangers in it.

Included with the 90 days

Two things come with the quarterly.

The white Metra Daily insulated water bottle with a stainless steel cap.

A Metra Daily water bottle $35 value

Ships in the box with your first order, so you're not mixing it in a coffee mug.

The 90-Day Strength Plan $10 value

Digital, emailed the day you order. What to take and when. A protein target in grams for your bodyweight. The two lifts that do most of the work for keeping muscle, and how often to do them. A checkpoint at weeks 4, 8 and 12 so you can tell whether it's working.

It also puts the timeline in writing. With no loading phase, creatine takes about 28 days of daily use before your stores are full. Week three is too early to judge it.

$45 together, included with your first order.

Drink it for the full 90 days. If your afternoons don't feel clearer, every dollar comes back. Yes, even if the tubs are empty.

A woman relaxed by a window in the early evening, at home in her routine.

2:45pm is the only part I had to remember.

Before you go

What I'd want to know before buying this.

I've already tried two or three supplements and nothing happened.

Same. The usual reason nothing happened is the label. "Proprietary blend" means the active ingredient is in there at some fraction of the studied dose and you have no way to find out which fraction. Creatine monohydrate has 500+ published studies and one job. If 90 days of it does nothing for you, send the empty tubs back and we'll refund it.

What does creatine actually do for memory?

In a 2024 meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials, creatine improved memory, attention and processing speed, with stronger effects in women. Overall cognition and executive function did not significantly improve, and the effect sizes were modest. So it's three specific things, at modest effect sizes. Not a personality transplant.

Is creatine safe? What about my kidneys?

The kidney story is the most persistent myth in the category, and it comes from a misread lab value. Creatine breaks down into creatinine, which is the marker doctors use to estimate kidney function, so taking creatine nudges that number up without anything happening to your kidneys. Controlled trials in healthy adults, some running five years, have not found kidney damage. Two practical notes: tell your doctor you take it so nobody misreads that panel, and if you have existing kidney disease, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, ask before you start.

Will it make me bloat or gain weight?

The water creatine pulls goes inside the muscle cell, not under the skin, which reads as firm rather than puffy. Nearly every bloating story you've read comes from a loading protocol, 20g a day for a week. We don't use one. It's 5g a day, steady. The scale can move a pound or two of water in the first few weeks and then settles.

How long until I notice anything?

The electrolytes you'll notice the same afternoon, mostly because you'll actually finish the glass. The creatine takes about four weeks of daily scoops to fill your stores, and brain stores fill more slowly than muscle. Ninety days is the honest window, which is why the guarantee runs that long.

Is this a nootropic?

No. One molecule, 500+ published studies, the full dose printed on the label. Not fourteen herbs in a proprietary blend with two studies between them.

Don't brains need more than 5g?

Brain creatine does rise more slowly than muscle creatine, and researchers are actively testing higher doses for brain-specific effects. We dose the 5g most of the evidence sits on instead of guessing past it. The hydration side pays the same week either way.

Is there caffeine in it?

Zero caffeine. Drink it at 2:45pm and it won't be the reason you're awake at 11.

How does it taste?

Light citrus, low sweetness. It doesn't taste like a gym product.

Is this a subscription? When am I billed, and how do I cancel?

Quarterly and monthly are subscriptions: $105 every three months, or $41.60 every month, charged the day you order and then on that schedule. Cancel anytime online, in one click. No phone call. If you'd rather not commit to anything, there's a single tub at $52 with no subscription attached. The shaker and the 90-Day Strength Plan come with the quarterly.

When will it arrive?

Three business days from order. Subscriptions ship before you run out, and you can cancel anytime.

When should I actually worry?

If memory changes are progressive, interfere with daily life, or worry the people around you, book an appointment. This page is about the normal kind. The other kind needs a doctor.

P.S.

If you scrolled straight to the bottom, here's the whole page.

Most midlife fog is three things: sleep, hydration and fuel. The glass covers hydration this week, because the electrolytes are why you finish it. The creatine fills the fuel stores over about four weeks. Across sixteen randomized trials it moved memory, attention and processing speed, with stronger effects in women, and it did not move overall cognition. Three tubs, about $1.17 a day, ninety days, empty tubs still refundable. Your first order comes with a Metra water bottle and the 90-Day Strength Plan. Sleep is still on you.
